Ace Cafe London’s regular monthly All-American Cruise-In from 4pm on Saturday 30th July celebrates the unique 120 year history and range that is Cadillac.
Established in 1902 the marque was named after and used the badge of the French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, who had founded Detroit in 1701.
Displaying their new vehicles at the New York Auto Show in January 1903, Cadillac was purchased in 1909 by General Motors, becoming GM’s prestige division and this was followed by, in 1926, the recruiting of the now legendary automobile stylist Harley J. Earl who, post WWII, authorized the distinctive “Dagmar” style to front bumpers and the introduction in 1948 of the tailfin to automotive styling, famously culminating with the 1959 Cadillacs – remembered for huge sharp tailfins with dual bullet tail lights.
Rock ‘n Roll legend the late great Elvis Presley bought and owned a lot of Cadillacs in his short lifetime – up to 200 by some estimates. Many were given away to friends, family, and sometimes even casual acquaintances, and whilst making it doubtful that an exact count of Elvis-owned Cadillacs can ever be compiled, his first Cadillac, providing transport for Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys, was a 1954 ‘Pink Cadillac’ Fleetwood Series 60. This was reported to be the King’s favourite car.
